    without gaining some realization of the tremendous advances of genetics in less than half a century, and particularly of its growing interrelations with other and older lines of scientific endeavor. No less can he fail to gain some — perhaps as yet hazy — vision of what lies in the future — maybe just around the corner. The relation of heredity to man in health and in disease and to some of his problems, social or otherwise, was not advanced as rapidly as other phases during the early development of genetics. The reasons for this are easily understandable. Difficulties, not encountered in experiments with plants and animals, everywhere confront the student of human heredity. The development of new techniques must be awaited. These have now been or are being devised. For one who, like the writer, has not kept abreast of all these more recent developments, the later chapters of this book come as a startling revelation. He can only wonder what future Messenger lectures on genetics and its applications will have to offer.
