Binding detail

Contemporary binding of blind tooled calf skin with a floral stamp in the centre and a floral border on wooden boards. The border is also stamped with the date "154[?]" and the initials "M.H.". Raised bands on spine, two stamped metal clasps (one broken) and red fore-edges. The binding has manuscript waste material. The front and back fly leaves are mediaeval parchment of "Summa Theologica, Prima Pars, Quaestio 89" by Thomas Aquinas. The text is written in a Gothic textura semi-quadrata bookhand in two columns, with alternating red and blue paragraph marks and decorated initials, and heavily abbreviated scholastic Latin. There are three further manuscript fragments, suggesting a Basel-region origin: a canon law text (possibly Gregory IX's Liber Extra Book III on ecclesiastical property and benefices), a formal chapter act in the collective voice, and a notarial document bearing an intact signum, a possible date of February 7, and a sum of 40 Gulden.
