    division, and the whole process has to be repeated from the point of view of the gaps which he has left. His true followers are not those who close their eyes to his failures, but those who embrace them and devote themselves to exploring them in the interest of truths that have escaped him, so that when the tide turns (as turn it must, seeing that the tide is the mind itself) the problem will at least have been advanced, and the system which they and others next project will be a more comprehensive and therefore a richer one. It is in the light of these common-places that I believe we can best under¬ stand the phase through which philosophical thought led by the Universities has been passing now for a generation or more. In the ’sixties and ’seventies of last century the thought of some of them—of Oxford in particular— began to be taken hold of ‘as with a giant’s hand’, to use Coleridge’s own expression, by the systematiz¬ ing enthusiasm which the revival of Platonic study, along with new influences from Germany, had brought with it and which for a whole generation, though not without vigorous protests, may be said to have dominated it. More recently and partly owing to a similar revival of Aristotle in the same University, attributed by general consent to the late Professor J. Cook Wilson, there has been a strong reaction in the other direction. The history of this movement and the similar one, which, springing from different sources and taking other lines.
