    PREFACE What follows is intended as a Comment on the informal symposium which some of my younger Oxford contemporaries have been recently conducting among themselves on the idea of Right in Morals. I call it a comment because I fear that some of them may dispute its claim to be a con¬ tribution. I rely for forgiveness even of the com¬ ment on the old proverb that ‘the onlooker may see most of the game’, notwithstanding that he might himself cut a poor figure if he were to take a hand in it, and on the fact that it is a game at which I have been an onlooker for longer than I like to think, with a growing sense of the magnitude of the issue at stake. This seems to me none other than the possibility of making any general statements as to what makes life worth living and so of having anything that can be rightly called a Moral Philo¬ sophy at all. That serious doubt on such a question should be raised by the present generation in two Universities, one of the chief glories of both of which has been the long line of thinkers who have devoted themselves to Platonic study, may seem a matter of surprise. But it will only be deplored by those who fail to recognize the necessity laid upon each generation, if philosophy in Plato s sense of the word as the Vision of the Good is to be kept really
