    Whose every wish was centered in thy good. But now, how changed! The hand that loved to guide Thy infant steps, and trace thy mother’s face Upon thy lineaments—must now, alas! Must now deliver thee to death’s embrace— For so the Almighty power above decrees.— I will not!—hence!—^Will not!—I must! I must! Such mercy would be false—would doom my son For an eternity to God’s dread anger— And has not God decreed?—What can I do? Oh, God! if such thy will, why not erase Each trace of past affection?—why not shed Oblivious dews o’er njemory’s dearest page. And blot his long-loved name from every line ? Oh, that my arm ere yet it strikes may fall Withered and impotent! But see—to whet My failing anger—how the syren meets His close embrace, and o’er him hangs deceitfid, As erst o’er Eve the wily serpent hung So witching, that she smiled at her own ruin,— My God! my God! thou sendest them entwined Before my sight, to urge my flagging purpose.— They come!—I am resolved.—Be firm, my heart!
