    SONNET. On Buonaparte entering Italy. Ah! view upon yon Alpine height The glitfring steel, the warriors’ state— Yon echoing cry is freedom’s call. The joyful shout at tyrant’s falL With smiles Ausonia looks upon her child, And spreads her richly-gifted land Before his gaze. — With hope, see! see ! she’s wild, That freedom’s hers, and by his hand. But, what! what! rushes on my wilder’d sight ? Ah, Italy ! no hope is thine — Thy son against thee rushes to the fight; His country’s spoils upon him shine — And thou as peasant sit’st, who’s view’d his corn, By forpo of clouds he pray’d for, beat down, torn.
