    I saw her carried to the grave — no eye Was tearless, and the poor in crowds Prest eager for a look, a sad last look Of her who nourished them, — XiM, But Francesco — Bin. Francesco! who’s Francesco? XiM. Saidst thou not Francesco wns the wretched mourner’s name? Bi N, You are mistaken, he is called Gustavus — He stood as ’twere of consciousness bereft Intently gazing on the lifeless form — But when at last he heard the falling earth With hollow sound upon the coffin lid, He then exclaimed — O God, thy worst is done I And drawing forth a poniard from his vest He sought to fall upon her grave and die — His hand — so God decreed — invaded not The sacred seat of life — unwillingly He yielded to his son’s assiduous love — His wound was quickly healed — but not his mind Bestored to peace — for since that fatal hour He flies the semblance of all joy, and seeks Each various form of self-inflicted pain- But hark! that solemn toll proclaims his hour
