    Xi M. Venetian dames Have eyes that well may give so deep a wound. — Rin. Xo, father, no — ’twas not in Italy — But here I met the spoiler of my peace — I seek these groves, because I here have watched Her light and airy step; and when her prayers Have gain’d a respite to the captives’ toil. Here have I seen her smiling on their joys, As nature smiles upon her varied works. When from the waves the glorious sun bursts forth To renovate and cheer the peopled earth. XiM. (aside) Now are the fates propitious — here’s a tool Most fit to work with — Rtn. None but the fair Euphemia’s virgin charms Could cause this love, to me more dear than life; For as the moon’s pale light, which naught revives. Still softens all the roughness of the scene. And gilds the craggy steep and falling wave : So though my hopeless love consumes my heart, Yet, still it charms and makes the future glow So bright in fair imagination’s dreams, That moments of such bliss more than repay The pangs I feel when reason holds the rule.
