Monat Paaineolsd ‘At Matra there are two kinds of quarantine performed : one by fhips with clean’ bills. of health,*and’ the other’ by fhips with foul bills. The’ firft, called the petty quarantine, lafts eighteen days, and the fhips which ‘perform it lie‘at the entrance of the port near the health-office. In order to enable the paffengers and crews, ‘without producing danger, to buy provifions.and converfe with ‘their friends; there are enclofures feparated by {tone pofts, with rails and palifades's: -and’ two foldiers ftationed. to —prevent any improper com- munication. ; 1 . And sane is the ufual method of receiving letters here. es . The other, ‘called the great quarantine, is performed at a dazaretto which is Gitincee on a peniniula near the city. On the moft elevated part ‘of this peninfula is Fort Manuel: the-lazaretto, being on the ‘fhore, is lefts airy. Additions have been made to it at different times.- .The old partis inconvenient, and too. clofe. -to admit of a proper ventilation of cottons and other merchandife. It has fixteen rooms on two floors.
