![Durin.q- the year 63 complaints were received and investi- gated nuisances l:)einft- found in 57 cases. 107 informal notices asking for the abatement of nuisances were served, and in !• instances tlu'se were followed up by statutory notices. No legal proceedings were undertaken during 1040. Meat and Food Inspection. This work entailed a great amount of labour and I was assisted by Mr. J. Hunt, of the Retford ITD.C. Health Department. I paid 712 visits to slaughterhouses, and 89,817 lbs of meat were condemned as unfit for human consumption. The numbers of animals which were slaughtered in the year were; Cattle 3,677; Calves 159; Pigs 2,822; Sheep 19,131. SUMMARY OF VISITS FOR 1940. The cleansing work was carried out without severe difficulties during the year but the labour question began to make itself felt before the year was out. The work was carried out very much on the lines of the previous years. The work of salvage of paper, metal, bones, rags, etc., was started and the quantity collected and sold during the year was: Papei' 110 tons 19 cwts.; Iron 68 tons 12^ cwts.; Non-Ferrous Metals 14 cwts. 6 stones; Textiles 4 tons 10 cwts.; Bones 2 tons 74 cwts.; Jam Jars 316 dozen.
