Description

Edward King, bishop of Lincoln. As vicar of Cuddesdon,"He was at the beck and call of anyone in sickness or in trouble ... During an attack of smallpox he assiduously visited the sick, and when no one else dared put the dead into their coffins he did it himself" (Oxford dictionary of national biography). Regius professor of pastoral theology at Oxford 1873-1885. Bishop of Lincoln 1885-1910, in which capacity he was accused of Roman practises in liturgy, hence "A persecuted bishop"; "Bishop of the poor"
