Fixed and invariable Conditions which influence the Climate. Of all the places along the shores of the Mediter- ranean, there is none more fortunately situated than Nice. With a direct southern exposure, in constant sunshine, it lies stretched out at the foot of hills, sheltered by a second—nay, even by a third enceinte of higher, and still higher hills, and even by a girdle of mountains which protects the city at the north, the east, and west. [It may be well, before proceeding further, if the reader will refer to the coloured map, and trace on it the different ranges of hills and mountains by which the city is surrounded and sheltered.]* * The Translator’s notes and additions are included within brackets.
