At inspiration, the vertebral sinuses empty themselves, the fluid returns to the vertebral canal, and again occupies the vacated space.” ^ There are some cases which appear to disprove the statement that the cerebro-spinal fluid is in in- verse ratio to the blood within the cranium. These exceptions, however, are only apparent. I allude to cases in which great cerebral congestion and effu- sion have been found to coexist. Dr. John Sims, in a paper on Serous Effusion,” gave many statistics and cases from which much information on this sub- ject may be gathered.*]* Table I. contains fifty cases of persons who died of various diseases, not cerebral, and who manifested no symptoms referable to the brain, but on dissec- tion, effusion of fluid and other morbid appearances were found in the brain or membranes.” Of these fifty cases there are six in which there-was much effusion and congestion together.
