About this work

Description

Differential interference contrast (DIC) micrograph of a transverse section through a mouse head across the nasal region. This slide mount was made by Thomas Russell between 1868 and 1901. Blood vessels were injected with dye before fixing and sectioning the tissue in order to visualise the capillary bed. Using DIC to illuminate the sample reveals greater details in the capillaries, muscles and other tissues visible. Composite of 80 individual images stitched together. Horizontal width of image is 5 mm.
