The old method of pouring the gas into lime water is inefficient and uncertain, and the cumbersome apparatus described in chemistry text-books needs to be fitted up for use each time it is required. To use this apparatus Baryta water is drawn up into the bulb through the capillary until the bulb is about a third full. The apparatus is then lowered into the vessel in which the c: arbon dioxide is suspected of existing, and gentle suction is applied at the tube.
