PARIS, S, D. A few letters at the upper corner of leaf i. iv. have been restored. 158 ANTIPHOBftNALE ROMANUM, or Service Book of the Roman Church Manuscript upon vellum, large folio, in a case The Manuscript is a fine specimen of its kind, the vellum on which it is written is very thick, the character is bold and well executed, it measures 21 i inches in length and 15^ inches in breadth, and there are 204 folios. It is bound in the old oaken style, with bosses and clasps. All the capital letters are illuminated in colours, and some of tfitem are further ornamented with gilding. At the commence- jadrent of each service there is a large illumination in gold and colours, and those are generally of a finished and superior chracter, illustrative to the services to which they are affixed— the Advent, the Nativity, the Resurrection, &c. There are also several portraits of Saints attached to the services on their days, and illustrations painted in the margins. There is no date affixed to the manuscript nor name of rubricator, illumi- nator, or scribe. Neither is there any writing to shew to what monastery or cathedral it has belonged. It is probably of the XIII or XIV Century, and is said to have been procured from Spain ; but its history is unknown. The above description was kindly drawn out by Mr. Petti- grew, from his own personal inspection.—W. G. 159 Missale Romanum, original binding 8vo MS.
