    TO THE SECOND EDITION. —__—_——_—_— In presenting to the Public a Second Edition of “The Industrial Resources of Ireland,” I feel 1t my duty, and certainly it is one peculiarly agreeable to an author, to express my grateful recognition of the kindness with which the work has been re- ceived, and the very favourable judgments which have been pronounced upon it by various competent authorities. I had, indeed, for many years devoted all the time and energy, which an individual could well com- mand, to obtain materials for the discussion of the problem that presented itself to me upon every side, and under various aspects; the problem of,—what field for work does Ireland really present? I had always found that real progress was effected only by genuine labour. I knew that all that is sound and permanent in England’s industrial power grew, not out of oratorical elegancies, but from hard-handed, stern, and persevering work. By such work alone,
