![of this Saint in Irish, although unfortunately imperfect, is preserved in the Book of Lismore, of which there is a copy in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy. v. Kal. Dec. (Nov. 27) p. 183. S. Secundus, called in Irish Sech- nall, and in most of the Latin Lives of St. Patrick, Secundinus. He was the son of St. Patrick’s sister, and his constant companion in his missionary labours. From St. Sechnall the town of Dunshaughlin (Domnach-Sechnaill, Basilica Secundini), in the County Meath, where he was buried, takes its name; he died A. D. 448. He was the author of the celebrated alphabetical hymn in praise of St. Pa- trick, so often mentioned in the life of that saint, which Colgan has published from an ancient manuscript of the Liber Hymnorum, now in the College of St. Isidore, at Romef. In the Martyrology of Aengus St. Sechnall is thus commemorated at the 27th of November: “ Spuaim ecnai co n-aine “ A stream of wisdom with nobility; Sechnall mino ap plairhi.” Sechnall the crown of our chief [i.e. of St. Patrick].” And a Latin gloss gives his descent thus: “ Sechnall piliup Repcicui Secunoini; “ i.e. Sechnall, filius RestituiSecundini; 7 oe Conjabapoia oeueccupepac; 7 Se- et de Longobardia devectus erat; et Se- cunoinup nomen eiup epac ibi.” cundinus nomen ejus erat ibi.” Another gloss adds : “.1. o Domnach Sechnaill; 7 mac i.e. “of Domnach Sechnaill; and he pechap parpaic h-e; .1. mac 00 61a- was the son of Patrick’s sister, i.e. the main.” son of Liaman.” The Preface to the hymn of St. Secundinus already alluded to makes him the son ofDarerca, not of Liaman: but on this subject see Colgan, f Trias Thaum. p. 211. I am indebted and used by Colgan are now preserved in to the Rev. Dr. Lyons for the knowledge the Franciscan College of St. Isidore, at of the fact, that the manuscripts collected Rome. IRISH ARCH.
