    INTRODUCTORY NOTES AS TO THE STATE OF THE INCOEPORATION OF SUEGEO^TS IN ITS EAELY PEEIOD. ^ July 1, 1505.—Seal of Cause was granted at this date by the Towu Council to the Surregeanis and Barbouris constituting them a Civic Incorporation of Edinburgh. October 13, 1506.-Charter of Confirmation of the preceding was granted by James IV, August 16, 1542.—Of this date it is recorded as follows :— Item, gevin to Anthone Brisset, surrurgeane, for labouris done be him to the Queen is Grace * at this time allenarly, . . , li Item, gevin to George Leche, Wilham Quhite, Geoi-ge Fothring- ham, and David Eobertsoun, surrurgeanis passand to tlie bordouris for curing of aU personis that hapnit to be hurt be the Inglis menne, xii li —( Pitcairn's Criminal Trials, vol. i. part i. p. 325.) ^ouQ of these five appear to have been living in 1581, thour^h Bris- set may have been an ancestor of JSTo. 2. ° June 10, 1558.-Of this date it is recorded that the Incorporation sent twenty-five of their number, apprentices included, to join -i corps then raised for the defence of the toune against our auld inemyes of Ingland.
