I have the honor to transmit herewith the third edition of the Abstract of the Twelfth Census of the United States. The first edition of the Abstract was pub- lished in Xoveinber, 1903. It proved so u.seful as a condensed summary of the ten quarto volumes containing the rei)orts of the Twelfth Census that the popular demand exhausted the edition in six months. A second e<lition from the .same plates \\a.s published and that is also exhausted. In addition to the material which ai)peared in the first and second editions of the Abstract, tables have l)een added relating to street and electric railways, central electric light and power stations, electric lire alarm and police patrol systems, and mines and quarries, together with a list of Census publications to tlate. The additional ilata embodies tbe results of all the sui.plemental inquiries reijuired by the census law which have been completed to date. Very respectfully, Hon. CiEORGE B.
