Wiiile honours and success thus rewarded his exertions, his health, which had never been strong, was irremediably injured by incessant application. Periodical head-aches, loss of sight in the right eye, and danger of total blindness, im])eded his labours in the cause of Science. Occasional resi- dence at the sea-side mitigated indeed these symp- toms; but the digestive organs being much impaired, his health was never restored.
