![[ « ] wrong application we have made of the talents, which have been beftowed upon us in this.—That if we fail of pra&ifing thefe common offices of huma¬ nity, when we are abundantly furnifhed with the means and capacity of doing it, we ffiall become ob¬ jects of God's juft difpleafure, and obnoxious to pu- niffiment; while diftrefled and fuffering virtue will meet at laft with that proper diftindtion and recom- pence, which may fo reafonably be expedted from his wifdom and juftice, when the lot of all men (hall be determined in a final and irreverfible manner. It is not indeed faid in the Parable, by what means the rich man had gained his riches; whether they were the acquifitions of induftry, or had been accumulated by the difhoneft arts of fraud and op- preffion; whether he poffeffed them as the inheri¬ tance of an antient family, or had opened for him- felf a fudden fource of wealth from fome lucrative commiffion. But in whatever manner thefe riches had been acquired, it appears that a proper and cha¬ ritable ufe had not been made of them; that they had not been applied by the owner to fupply the wants or to relieve the neceffities of his fuffering brethren, as a fituation of fo much affluence required of him.
