This rare edition at the end of “Le Livre de lordre de chevalerie” contains. “ung petit traictie a lenseignement & au prouffit de tous princes barons & aultres qui le vouldront entendre & garder lequel fut fonde & extrait dune Jictton trouvee en escript,” which is a dialogue between “ Melibée et Prudence.” This being appended has led Du Verdier into the error of supposing it a part of the work, and that this “Jeu des Echecz” was totally different from that of Jacques de Cessoles, once so popular as to be translated into almost every European language, including into English from the French by William Caxton, whose first edition was printed in 1474, A manuscript. of this version in the King of Sardinia’s library states that the French translator’s name was “F’rére Jean du Vignay de lV Ordre des Fréres du Hault Pas,” and that it was made “ &@ la requeste et priére de noble homme Bertrand Aubry de Tarascon.” CS unknown to Brunet, Italian vellum Delia, 8vo.
