    THE BIOLOGICAL REVOLUTION: ITS MEANING FOR MEDICINE a lecture by Nobel laureate Dr. Francis CRICK Dr. Crick is one of the principal founders of the science of molecular biology and is widely recognized as the leading theoretical biologist of his generation. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962 together with Dr. Jim Watson for their discovery of the structure of the molecules which provide the here ditary information within a cell. In the last twenty years since Dr. Crick's discovery, there has been an enormous growth of our knowledge of heredity. We now know what genes are made of, how they are copied and how they affect the cell. The lecture will explain all this in a straightforward way. Recently our ability to read this genetic message has increased dramatically. This has given us much detailed knowledge of particular genes and has also allowed us to change genes in simple organisms, so that they can produce useful chemicals for us. These methods are likely to have a powerful impact on medical treatment, some examples of which will be given. Other new research methods now allow us to produce special recogni tion molecules for diagnostic and other purposes. Dr. Crick in addition to discussing the implications of the modern biolo gical methods for medicine, will also discuss the impact of these techniques in the field of agriculture and the possibility of improving chemical processes used in industry. Dr. Crick was born and educated in Great Britain and for many years was one of the leading scientists at the molecular biology laboratory of the U.K. Medical Research Council in Cambridge, England. Dr. Crick joined The Salk Institute for Biological Studies, located in Cali fornia, as a distinguished research professor in 1977. In addition to his conti nuing involvement in molecular biology, he has begun the development of a theoretical framework to explain how the human brain perceives and inter prets visual information.
