![REFUSE COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL This service, with a weekly collection, has been maintained throughout the year with remarkably few complaints. Credit is due to the driver and loaders for this satisfactory record. A visit was made to the Public Works Exhibition at 01ym])ia to see the latest refuse vehicles, but the ideal lorry with large capacity, small turning circle, large wheels, good ground clearance, low loading line and absence of wheel arch is just not possible, and the difficulties of serving this district, with awkward lanes, are likely to continue. SALVAGE During the year, the following items of salvage have been sold ;— Weight -Approx. Value Waste Paper ... ... 41 tons 16 cwts. 1 qr. £244 13 5 Scrap Metal ... ... 2 tons 6 cwts. 2 qrs. £9 6 0 Total ... £253 19 5 The price for salvaged paper has increased from £4 : 10 : 0 to £6 : 10 : 0 per ton. The Council have continued the salvage bonus for the men. This valuable raw material is being saved and the difficulties of disposing of it at our tips are avoided. CESSPOOL EMPTYING SERVICE This service, brought into operation in 1948, has been utilized to clear 333 cesspools and septic tanks during 1954. The contractors, employed by the Council, visit the district every 3 months.
