Aulus Gellius, a Roman writer and grammarian, born at Rome in the early part of the second century. He became a resident of Athens, but returned to Rome and obtained the office of judge. The Attic Nights is a curious collection of anecdotes, arguments and observations on a variety of subjects. It contains fragments of several lost works. He informs the reader that he wrote the book to amuse children. The text of this edition exhibits variations from those which preceded it. CAERMARTHEN.—23.
