Speaking of this book Professor Henry Morley says: ‘‘It connected with the past the life of his own day, gave unity to all, and placed at the head of it the sense of nationality. Ir WAS IN HIS NATURE TO CARB RATHER TO MARK THE PROGRESS OF A PEOPLE THAN TO CELEBRATE THE POWER OF A CHIEF.’’ It is amusing to note James I.’s continued aversion to this book: in his BeotAtkov Awpov he recommends his son to be well versed in authentic histories, but cautions him: ‘“‘J mean not of such infamous invectives as Buchanan’s or Knox’s Chronicles : and if any of these infamous libels remain until your days, use the law upon - the keepers thereof.
