Effra House (near the church) Brixton, London. ; A home for ladies nervously or mentally afflicted. ; Proprietor Mr Cyrus A. Elliott ; Conducted by Mrs Symmons ; Engd. by T. H. Ellis, Jewin St.
Lettering on the reverse reads: The house, surrounded by its lawn, walled-in garden, meadow & orchard, has long been admitted to be one of the most beautiful and secluded residences in this well-known healthy locality. The additions & detached buildings have been erected on the most approved plans, so arranged with padded & other apartments, as to render mechanical restraint in the worst cases unnecessary, affording classification to the insane, quietitude to the nervous, and to the epileptic, those accommodations which are so particularly required. This establishment being exclusively for the reception of females, will render a greater extent of liberty & recreation available, in many cases, than can possibly be obtained in houses where both sexes are admitted. Those patients whose cases permit, will be allowed (accompanied) to walk & ride into the country & attend divine worship, & if change of air is considered requisite, will by the request of their friends, be sent to the sea coast, where the proprietor has a cottage always in readiness. For terms & attendants apply as above, or at Cowper House, Old Brompton, London.
