![nae be We ee 66 | ‘S signal success, to bring into use. ‘That it is one of no common influence over the manifold uneasy sensations attendant upon a certain condition of frame, is with me no matter of doubt—nay, I am thoroughly persuaded, that neither its powers, nor its worth, are as yet otherwise than very imperfect- ly understood, much as its virtues have been thought to be overrated, and the statement of what it has accomplished overdrawn.* As far as my experience of its effects has gone, | feel bound to say that it deserves to be hailed as one of the most decided discoveries of general usefulness and ap- plicability, which has ever been made knownt— * Nothing could be a greater bar to improvement in the practice of medicine, than the supine belief that nothing can be added to our knowledge of the qualities of those remedies which have been long:in use. We know, however, that the greater number of those who are stimulated by the laudable ambition of distinguishing themselves as the benefaciors of mankind, direct their efforts to the discovery of new remedies, instead of instituting experiments with those whose medicinal] powers are already known.
