    CHAP. II. A general account of thegarrifon difeafes of the Britiflj troops in Flanders, and in the cantonments in Germany, in the years 1742. and 1743. IN the beginning of June, 1742. the Britifh 1742. troops began to embark for Flanders. There were in all, of foot and cavalry, about 16,000: the winds were favourable, the feveral paffages fhort, the men landed in good health and went into their feveral garrifons. The head-quarters were at Ghent, with moft of the cavalry, three bataliions of guards, one march¬ ing regiment, and the artillery; eight bataliions were quartered at Bruges; two at Courtray ; a regiment of dragoons lay at Gudenarde; and an¬ other was divided between Aloft and Grammont. There was a general hofpital at Ghent, but in the other garrifons the care of the fick was committed to the furgeons of their refpeftive regiments. During the fummer and autumn the weather was good, the heats moderate, and the country in general healthy. The Britifh officers continued well, but many of the common men fickened; and this feems to have been the reafon.
