![Goodnefs and Wifdom of it, becaufe Riches, both on Account of acquiring and enjoying them, are Matters of fuch dangerous Temptation, The Moralift has more than once repeated it for our Obfervation, 'That he that hajleth to be rich, )hall not be innocent. And Tacitus, I remember, the Roman Hiftorian, of approv’d Judgment and un¬ common Penetration, fpeaking of the native Po¬ verty of the German People, who knew not the Ufe of Gold and Silver, fays, Argentum & An¬ num propitii an irati dii negaverint, dubito. He queftions whether that fort of Ignorance was not rather owing to the Bleffing than the Difplea- fure of Providence. The Apoftle St. Paul, ad¬ monishes us, That they that will be rich, fall in¬ to Temptation and a Snare, and into many foolijh and hurtful Lujls, which drown Men in Perdi¬ tion and DeJlruBion : For the Love of Money is the Root of all Evil, which, while fome coveted af¬ ter , they have erred from the Truths and pierced them].'elves through with many Sorrows.
