    CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE INSTITUTION or THE COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS OF PHILADELPHIA. COMMEMOEATIYE ADDEESS. Bt S. WEIR MITCHELL, M.D., PRESIDENT 01 THE COLLEGE, Delivered January 3, 1887. We are met this evening to commemorate the hun- dredth birthday of the oldest medical society m America which is not a State organization. JSTew Jersey and Massachusetts have State societies of older date, which of necessity met rarely, and were chiefly meant to give unity, force, and discipline to a profession, the members of which were widely scattered over a thinly peopled country. One hundi-ed years ago the grave and kindly man whose portrait hangs above me at our meetings, met the Fellows of this ancient College as theu- fii'st Presi- dent.
