    musical, or medical character, from the pen of members of this family. An early work of 1622 is by one Barent Lampe. Henricus Lampe, M.D., possibly our Doctor, wrote Disputatio-—de valetudine prospera etadivisa(Lugduni Batavorum, 1695), 4to. Our Doctor was at this time in England, but it is not improbable that he had this work printed at his old University city of Leyden. Friedrich Adolph Lampe figures as a theological author from 1700—some of his works being printed at Bremen, Amsterdam, Frankfort, &c.,andatransla- tion of his Theological dissertations con- cerning the endless duration of punish- ment, was reprinted at Edinburgh in 1796. Some twenty-four of his books were issued from the press, inclusive of reprints. Other Lampe authors flour- ished from 1720 to 1877, their works being published at Danzig, Bremen, Leipzig, Zurich, Berlin, Halle, Christiana, and other places. There is one member of the Lampe family who deserves more than a passing notice, vzz.: Johann Friedrich Lampe, of London. Sir George Grove, in his Dictionary of Music and Must- crams, says of him that he was born in Saxony in 1703, came to England about 1725, and was engaged as a bassoon
