    three quarters * avoiidupois, of dry fait of tartar into an open earthen veffel, and pour thereon five full quarts, wine meafure, of the fofteft water, that is clean and limpid, that can be procured, and iHr them well to- gether with a clean piece of wood. After (landing 24 hours, carefully decant, from any indiifoluble refiduum that may remain, as much as will fill the middle part of one of the glafs machines for impregnating water with Fixible Air-f-. The alkaline liquor is then to be expofed to a fti earn of Air accord- ing to the dirc6lions commonly given for im- pregnating water with that fluid. When the alkaline folution has remained in this fituation till the Fixible Air ceafes to rife, a frefh quantity of the fermenting materials fhould be put into the lower part of the ma- chine, and the folution expofed to a fecond team of Air, and this procefs repeated four times, * Two ounces and a half troy weight contain 1200 grains; two ounces and three quarters avoirdupois con- tain I20I grains and a quarter of a grain. + If the fait of tartar be good, and perfeaiy fo- ubie in the water, every ounce meafure of the alka- ine folution fliould contain feven grains and a half of al- kaline fait.
