    PREFACE. • The pian wliich I bave adopted in preparìng these Memoirs for publication in England bas been, first, to make a careful verbatim translation of tbem ; and, secondly, as tbe amount of space assigned to me in tbis volume did not allow of tbeir being publisbed in extenso, to condense and summarize tbem, wbicb I believe bas been accomplisbed witbout obscuring tbe text, or misrepresenting tbe meaning, of tbe Autbors.
