This is certainly more ration than to fuppofe the Infection, whofe Scent remains u terly unknown, to be the Caufe hereof (a.) Common Experience aflures us, that the Diflen per, tho’ palliated for a Seafon, often remains unci red, and breaks out more feverely after a Salivatiq has been accidentally raifed by Mercurial Preparation internally taken; which gives a Sufpicion, at leaft, th; fuch an Evacuation is not the proper Cure in this Cafe.(< Nay, fo far are the skilful Artills from promoting th Difcharge, when it thus happens, that they endeavom by all means, to put a fpeedy flop thereto : A confkh rable Argument, furely, that they think Salivation ei ther ufelefs here, or detrimental. After the ufe of a little mercurial Unguent, or bef of the Salivation riles to its intended height, many Symf toms of the Diftemper, as Ulcers, Shankers, Pains in th Limbs, <&c. ufually vanifh : But if the Effedls of Mer (c) The weak Efficacy of what we call a walking Salivation,, that is, a fmal fpitting, for which a venereal Patient is not confined to his room, confirms thi Obfervation. I do not now meddle with the danger thatattends fuch a Practice though that might well “ excufe the putting a fpeedy flop thereto”: But this,i feems, is not the Motive here; becaufe, were a fuitable Regimen ordered, the] might, perhaps, with fafety continue this Evacuation.
