![the several pharmacopoeia! preparations, and is thus exhibited with much advantage in habitual constipation, in passive dropsies, in alvine obstruction, and as a revulsant in determination of blood to the brain. It is also said to possess diuretic properties. Dose and Mode of Administration.—In powder (now seldom used) gr. ij. to gr. viij. mixed with some inert powder. Powdered colocynth if sprinkled over a blistered surface acts as a cathartic as actively as if administered by the mouth, and it may be used with ad- vantage in this way in apoplexy and other diseases in which the patient is unable or unwilling to swallow. Its use must not, however, be pushed .too far, as if it does not purge, it is apt to cause in- flammation of the intestines.—Extraction Colocynthidis {simplex, D.), D. L. E. (Colocynth pulp, Jbj. ; water, (distilled, L.) cong. j. (cong. ij. L. E.) ; boil, down to ibiv. by measure, (for six hours gently, replacing the water occasionally, L. E.), strain while hot, and evaporate (in the vapour-bath, E.) to a proper consistence). A bad preparation as it does not keep well; but seldom used ; Dose, gr. v. to 9i.—Extractum Colocynthidis compositum, [U. S.] D. L. (Colocynth pulp, cut small, §vj. ; hepatic aloes (purified extract of aloes, L.), [aloes, in powder, U. S.] §xij. ; scammony, powdered, §iv. ; cardamom seeds, powdered, §i. ; (hard, D.) soap, §iij. ; proof spirit, cong. j.; macerate the colocynth in the spirit for four days with a gentle heat; add the aloes, scammony, and soap to the (expressed, D.) and strained liquor ; then evaporate to a proper consistence (for making pills, D.), the cardamom seeds being mixed in towards the end). One of the most generally employed, and safest cathartics in the whole Materia Medica, and if the various substances of which it consists be pure, equally efficacious as safe. Dose, gr. v. to gr. xv.— Pilulcc Colocynthidis, E. (Socotrine or Indian aloes ; and scammony, of each, 8 parts; colocynth, 4 parts; sulphate of potash ; and oil of cloves, of each, 1 part ; rectified spirit, a sufficiency ; pulverise the aloes, scammony, and sulphate together, mix the colocynth in fine powder, add the oil, and with the aid of a little spirit, beat into a pro- per pill mass). Pilulcc Colocynthidis compositce, D. (Hepatic aloes; and scammony, of each, |i.; colocynth pulp, |ss. ; Castile soap, 3ij.; sulphate of potash ; and oil of cloves, of each, 3i- ; process the same as in the Ed. Ph., the soap with a little treacle, being employed in- stead of the spirit). Both these preparations resemble in their opera- tion the compound extract, to which I think they are to be preferred, the dose is the same.—Pilulcc Colocynthidis et Hyoscyami, E. (Colo- cynth pill mass, 2 parts ; extract of hyoscyamus, 1 part; beat well together, adding a few drops of rectified spirit if necessary ; and divide into five grain pills). An excellent preparation, peculiarly adapted for persons with irritable bowels. Dose, 1 to 3 pills.—Enema Colocyn- thidis, L. (Compound extract of colocynth, 9ij.; soft soap, §i.; water, Oj. ; mix and rub together). An efficient enema in obstinate constipa- tion and colic.—Tinctura Colocynthidis, Pr. Pol. F. B. (Colocynth, §i. ; star anise, 5i- ; rectified spirit, gxiv.; digest for three days and filter). Dose, min. x. to min. xv. in a mixture.—Decoctum. Colocyn- thidis, B. (Colocynth, 5i- ; boiling water, §vj. ; boil for ten minutes, strain, and add sulphuric ether, 3i. ; syrup of orange peel, §i.). Both these preparations are diuretic ; Dose, f§ss. two or three times daily. Incompatibles.—The fixed alkalies ; lime water ; sulphate of iron; acetates of lead ; nitrate of silver ; and corrosive sublimate.](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b21143602_0098.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
