![I 64 ] It is too often urged, as a reafon for changing our practice in the cure of dif- eafes, that becaufe one fet of medicines have proved ineffedtual, others, of an op- pofite tendency, muft do good*; and fince in This reafoning, however, in certain cafes., and to a certain extent, ftill holds good.._It was in this manner that the late illuftrious Dr. Brown reafoned, refpeding the Cure of the Gout. He had been afflided with it himfelf frequently, and had very long and fevere attacks, notwithftanding he ftudioufly adhered to the antifthenic plan, in every refped. Finding that the complaint ra- ther increafed than otherw'ife, he began to doubt the pro- priety of the means which had been adopted, and to con- clude, that an oppofite plan of treatment might produce a different, and, of courfe, a better effect. He lived well and took ftimulants; from which tipie he became better, and continued ever after to be lefs feverely affidlcd than before; the fits were both much more fpeedUy carried off, and he was much lefs frequently attacked by them.
