About this work

Description

Half-length to left looking at spectator. Grey wig, white frilled ruff, dark blue jacket with large buttons, in feigned oval. Comparison with the portrait in Robert Jackson's 'A view of the formation ... armies', London: Parker Furnival, 1845, where the frontispiece represents him in uniform and unbewigged, suggests a general similarity of mouth and eyes. The painting could represent the same man: he was M.D. Leiden, physician in Stockton-on-Tees, surgeon and Inspector-General of Army Hospitals
