Hie hebt sicb an ein gnt niiczlicb bucb Ton d’ recbtlicben iiberwindnng xpi wider Satban den fiirsten der belle vn des sunders betrosfciig, sm. folio, Gothic letter, 93 leaves, 33 or 34 lines •per page, with 38 large and curiotis woodcuts; from the Firchheimer and Norfolk libraries, red morocco extra, gilt edges, by Bedford Anthonius sorg in . . urbe Augustensi . . Anno dni Ixxix . . (1479) This extraordinary romance was very popular in the fifteenth century. The early illustrated editions are excessively rare. The good bishop—Jacobus de Palladino de Theramo—who wrote this singular book towards the end of the fourteenth century, was probably quite unconscious that he was giving such an opportunity for grotesque illustration as has seldom been enjoyed by anti-Christians. 374 DER TEUTSCH BELIAL. Der Welsche Gast von Thomas VON CiRKLERE [Zii’claria], sm. folio, illuminated MS. on vellum, with 116 Miniatures richly coloured^ many of them in the French style on diapered hachgrounds: blue morocco extra^ gilt edges About a.d. 1400 A remarkable allegorical poem in German, by a native of Eriuli, wbicb is sufficiently described in tbe sixteenth-century inscription— “ Plusienrs moralitez en bant alemand comment on se doit gouvemer en ce monde.” Presented to tbe library of tbe Dukes of Burgundy by tbe Archduke Maximilian on tbe occasion of bis marriage with Mary of Burgundy in 1477. Their joint ai’ms, with two angels for supporters, are inserted in tbe first initial by a Burgundian artist of masterly skill, whose work offers a singular contrast to tbe German art of tbe original illuminator, although this is conceived and executed in a magnificent manner. Tbe decorative value of the illumination is considerable, and full of variety; tbe figure-drawing very poor. But there is such a quantity of illustration that this book is distinctly important for tbe history of costume and armour in Western Germany at tbe beginning of tbe fifteenth century. Tbe poem, wbicb is somewhat of tbe nature of many French allegorical romances, has been printed a couple of times recently in Germany, but without a collation of tbe present text. 377 CAVALLERO DETERMINADO. [LA MARCHE (Olivier de)] El Cavalleeo determinado, traduzido de lengua Francesa en Castellana, por Don Hernando de Acyna, sm. 4to. 20 copperplate engravings, blue morocco, gilt edges Ihi Anveres, en Voficina Flantiniana, 1591 Not in the Salva collection. The last plate represents the encounter between “LaMuerte” and the “Auctor,” a knight on horseback armed with a lance against whom Death brandishes a spear in his right hand, while he bears a cofSn-lid in the manner of a buckler on his left arm. —It is generally supposed that Charles V himself rendered the French original into Castilian prose and employed Acuna to put his translation into verse. 20 0 0 6 10 0 5 10 0 450 0 0 6 0 0](https://iiif.wellcomecollection.org/image/b24887286_0077.jp2/full/800%2C/0/default.jpg)
