    PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. ♦ More than forty years have now elapsed since the first edition of this work met the public eye. It was published in 1805, shortly after I had graduated as M. B. in the University of Dublin, and ere I had yet completed my twenty-fifth year. These facts are mentioned as some apology for the errors and im- perfections with which, under such circumstances, that publication necessarily abounded, though they did not prevent it from experiencing, both in Great Britain and on the Continent, a reception far more favourable than the presumption and inexperience of its author merited. A consciousness of these im- perfections, a conviction of the importance of the subject, and a feeling of regret that, respecting the disease in question, opinions erroneous, in my judg- ment, should, by some, be still entertained, have in- b
