    PREFACE. The circumstance which first suggested to the author to write on Headachs, was that of having suffered from them severely himself. Very many of the fol¬ lowing observations, therefore, are strictly practical, and deduced, in a great measure, from personal ex¬ perience and reflection. Though headachs frequently partake of a mixed character, in which two or more of the varieties are combined, or change, by induction, into one another; yet the writer conceives that these complex forms of the disorder will be better understood by treating of them separately, and noting the most distinguish¬ ing characteristics of each.
