most satisfactory financial results. In addition to valuable assistance given by the Dispenser to the Secretary in the office during any greater pressure of office work, and in addition to the usefulness of the Dispenser as Clerk to the Members of the Medical Staff during their visits, the total cost of the Dispensary during the year, including the salary and board of the Dispenser, has been only £127 17s. 6d., or as 2s. l^d. per Patient; 4890 prescriptions having been dispensed, without any avoidable delay; the very best quality of drugs having been purchased; and a saving having been effected in money alone of £61 7s. 7d. One Legacy was received during the past year, amounting to £261 5s. lOd., from the Executors of W. Sharman, Esq., of Hull; one Legacy of £45 from the Executor of Mrs. Ann Greenwood, of Trubsmithy, near Eochdale, was reported to the Committee before the end of the year, and has been received during the present month of January; and one Legacy of £250 tinder the will of William Gibson, Esq., of Arbroath, was reported during the past year, and is to be paid during the ensuing month of May. Mr. Sharman's Legacy, and that of £100 received under the will of Miss Emma Hurt during the year 1867, and the whole of the Life-Subscriptions received during the year, amounting to £193, have been invested in Consols, to- gether with so much of the money received from Donations as makes a total investment amounting to £1080 10s. Od.; serving as an additional provision and guarantee against the liabilities of the Hospital in regard to the recommendations of its Life Subscribers. The amount of these liabilities on the 288 powers of recommendation possessed by the Life Subscribers, subject to a cost of £1 14s. 2d. per Patient, would, if exercised, occasion a charge on the expenditure of the year of £492, and would require a representative capital in the three per cents of no less than £16,400. Even with the recent investment, the whole funded property of the Hos- pital only amounts to £3309 5s. 7d., in addition to an investment of £100 in Midland Eailway debentures ; showing th at, while most thankful for the success that has attended the operations of the Hospital, both in regard to its beneficial influence on the Patients and the maintenance of its solvency, the future is still dependent upon uncertain sources of income; and it possesses no invested money from which to derive the difference between the One Guinea received from the Annual Subscriber, and the £1 14s. 2d. expended on the Patient, but has to look, with some anxiety, to the dona- tions of the charitable public, to collections in churches and chapels, and to the Legacies of its friends and benefactors, for the means of maintaining its great position and extending its usefulness. The names of William Currey, Esq., of London; George Drewry, Esq., of Holker; and John Guest, Esq., of Eotherham, have been added to the list of Vice-Presidents of the Hospital. These gentlemen have been kind friends and supporters of the Hospital during many years. Dr. Eobertson has been again unanimously re-elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees and of the Managing Committee of the Hospital. Mr. Samuel Turner has been again unanimously re-elected Treasurer to the Hospital.
