D’Avenant (Sir William) Gondibert: an Heroick Poem, FIRST EDITION, with leaf of errata in front of ttle, some leaves wormed, original calf sm. 8vo. 1661 *,* Shakespeare is considered to have been D’Avenant’s god- father, and this work is instanced by Hunter as evidence of the popularity of Romeo and Juliet, since there are scenes laid at Verona and a character called Tybalt. Contains com- plimentary verses by Waller and Cowley addressed to the author before his voyage to America. Shakespeare. [Gildon (C.)] The Lives and Characters of the Eng- lish Dramatick Poets. First begun by Wm. Langbain, improved and continued down to this Time by a Careful Hand, some leaves stained in indea 8v0o. 1699 *,* Contains matter relating to Shakespeare not in Langbaine’s edition, notably in connection with the Poet and Sir William D’Avenant’s mother, p. 32; also a tradition that the Ghost Scene in Hamlet was written in the Poet’s house bordering on the churchyard. Oxford, 16338 *,* At p. 472 no mention is made of Shakespeare among the Poets, but at p. 510 the story of Machbed is given in detail as dramatised, with this notice: “ A History then which for variety of action, or strangenesse of event I never met with any more pleasing,” thus showing the story was a popular one. Pages 767-807 are devoted to America, with a list of the Chiefe American Citties on the latter page. Shakespeare. Heylyn (Peter) Cosmographie in foure Books, con- taining the Chorographie and Historie of the whole World, engraved title and maps, including one of America dated 1663, old calf folio. 1677 *,* This book is of interest to Bacon-Shakespeareans, since the author, although evidently well acquainted with poetry and the drama, makes no mention of Shakespeare by name. On p. 258 he includes Sir John Falstaf as one of the ten most valourous souldiers, adopting Shakespeare’s orthography in- stead of the more correct Fastolf.
