    PREFACE This study of the generations, which embodies an attempted analysis of the relationship of parents to children, is based upon a series of lectures which was delivered a year ago at the Institute of Medical Psychology (the Tavistock Clinic) under the title, 'Problems of Parenthood'. The original plan has been recast, because it became clear that the family could only be studied as a cycle of changes which tended to return upon themselves. The title 'The Generations' seemed in consequence to suit the thesis of the book.
