    which break up this unity and make for the unhappi- ness of its members. Study of primitive society has led the sociologist to consider the problems involved in such institutions as exogamy, polyandry, polygamy and promiscuity, matriarchy and patriarchy. But such descriptions do not carry us into the very heart of the problem. Modern psychology, however, in dealing with the subject of individual emotional disorders, has at last opened a door upon those dark chambers of the mind in which the secrets of human relationships lie hidden. And those who have ventured in have discovered not only many things about the growth of the human mind, in a general sense, but have discovered clues as to the nature of the family relationships which create the problems of modern society and of the modern individual. For our knowledge of the pattern of neurotic be haviour and for the technique of explaining the mind we must not hesitate to acknowledge our indebted ness to Sigmund Freud in particular, and to his dis tinguished followers, Jung and Adler. Freud fearlessly explained those deep emotions which we are prone to hide from ourselves. And inasmuch as he frankly exposed the love and hate antinomies beneath the most respectable mental attitudes, he had to suffer the attack of the vested interests which none of us can deny that we protect.
