    PREFACE. iNDER an impression, that cerT tain of the authorities referred to in the following publication re- quire a more minute specification than they have received in the pages where they are respectively quoted, I give here, as in the pro- perest place, such further infor- mation as seems to be requisite. I begin with Reginald, with re- spect to whom a few remarks are the more necessary, as his book has never been published. The copy of which I have availed myself, belongs to the Dean and Chapter of Durham (MSS. Hunter, No. 101), by purchase from the executors of Dr. Hunter, who died in 1757 j and from my acquaintance with the different modes of writing in use at different periods, I am of opinion that it must have been written before the year 12C0. It is, of course, upon parchment, the leaves of which measure about six inches in length, and about four and a quarter in breadth. The space occu- pied by the writing varies in almost every page. The first Chapter is the Dedication, headed “ Incipit Epistola Reginaldi Dunelmensis Mo- nachi ad Dominum iEthelredum* * Abbatem Ecclesiae Rievallensis di- recta,” in which the writer styles iEtheldred “ Piisimus Dominus & Pater, domus domini dispensator regius.” Next succeed nine Chapters, chiefly of an introductory nature, and then commences the book itself, with the following title,— Incipit Libellus de Admirandis beati Cuthberti virtutibus qua; novellis patratae sunt temporibus.” The initial U above is a fac-sftnile of the first letter of an endowment of the Vicarage of Norharo, dated llth June, 1380. * See Fuller’s Worthies, and Burton’s Mon.
