![4 inay be given, yet feldom is or need to be given move then Haifa fcruple at a time. And there is as much danger hi opiats as purgatives, though their bad effe&s. when.mifap- plied are not fo fudden and frightful. PilnU «x Duobus. Page 113. Latin. Or, Pills of two things. Colledg. Take ofCoIocynthis, and Scameny, of each one ounce. Oy l of Cloves as much as is fufficient to Malax them well: then with a little Syrup of purging Thorn. Make it into Vertues newly added. Thefe Pills are named from the paucity of their ingredients, it being rare to fee a Pill compounded only of two ingredients, not reckoning the Oyl of Cloves and Sympe. This- Pill was I fuppofe connived to ac- | commodate thofe that cannot be perfwaded to take above one or two pills at a time, and therefore they were made lo ftrong that one Pill in Ibme Bodies and two in moft will Work handfomely. They purge cho- ler and flegm from all parts, are fit for ruftick bodies, ana have been fuppofed to be thofe Pills the people in London have fo much fought and fo dearly bought under the name of De Lavme his Head-pills. Ten or twelve graines. gilded with. Gold make a gallant head Pill to be taken in the morning and to fleep after the fame. I need not fay that thin borath of veal, or poffet drink is ufually taken after the working of fuch Medicaments, to wafh them from the ftomadi, temper their acri¬ mony, and facilitate their ejeftion. Alfo after ftrongPhyfick taken in the morning it is good for the patient to dine timely, which prevents weak- nefs, and furthers the operation of the Phyfick in the Afternoon. For all Culpeper is in fuch an af¬ fright at the Contemplation of thefe terrible Pills, yet I have been aflured by a learned and expert' praftitioner in this City of London now living this prefent year 16^9. That a final Pill thereof hath' been given to Chil¬ dren fuccefsfully again!!: the Worms, and without any danger. There is fbore of Oyl of Cloves in the Mafs thaeof, which by its delicious Aro- matick flavour corrects the Maligni¬ ty, and by its Oylybody muffles and and fheathes the Acrimony of the Coloquintida, and Scammony. Alfo the ftomach and all the inward bo¬ wels and Organs, are as effe&uaily guarded and armed by the Chymical Oyl of cloves, as if a great quantity of Spices were added in fubftance, as the manner is to correft ordinary Pills. ■- , ’ This Pill h by fom* ufed to purge PILL S. fuch as are infefted with the great Pocks. In which cafe I conceive lefs then a fcruple is not given, and it may be half a dram in ftrong Bodies. And poflibly being of late invention, it may have been framed for the Me¬ ridian of that difeafe, as Hercules his greatClub to knock down aMonfter, But fuch hot and dry Medicaments do many times fail the Phyfitians ex¬ pectation in meager hot and dry bo¬ dies, when neverthelefs an ounce of Ele&uarium Lenitivum or of Catho- licon will do fome feates. In fuch bodies therefore the Patient mull drink, warm Whey, or eat ftewed Pruens good ftore after the firft ftool. Pilnltede Eupotorio. Page 123. Latin. Or, Pills of Eupatorium. Colledg. Take of the Juyct of Maud¬ lin, and Wormwood made thick. Citron Myrobalans, of each three drams. fhubarb three drams and an half. Maflich one dram. Hoes five drams. Saffron half a dram. Syrup of the Juyce of EndivejOs much as is fufficient Make it into a Mafs. Culpeper.] Having compared this Receipt of Mefne with Reafon, I find it a gallant gentle purge, and ftreng- thening, fitted for fuch bodies as are much weakned by difeafes of chol- ier. The Author appropriates it to fuch as have Tertian Agues, the yel¬ low Jaundice, obftru&ons or ftop- pings of the Liver; half a dram taken at night going tobed, wil work with an ordinary body, the next day by noon. The truth is, I was before fparing in Relating theDofes of moft purging Phyficks, becaufe they are to be regulated according to the ftrength of the Patient, &c. Phyfick is not to be prefumed upon by un¬ able Phyfitians, left they meet with their matches, 2nd over-matches too. They that think the ufe of thefe Me¬ dicines is too brief, (it’s fo only for cheapnefs of the Book) let them read thefe Books of mine, of the laft Edi¬ tion, vi^. fiver ins, fis Units, John- fion, Veflingus, Sennerttts, and Thy fief for the Poor. ... PiluLe Fcetidte. Page 123. Latin, Or, Strong'fftielling Pills. Cofledg. Vertues newly added. - * Tkefe befides the Vermes mentio-‘ ned do move the courfes', clenfe a foule Womb of Flegmatick and Putrid baggage, and are good to prepare the fame for conception, be¬ ing difcreetly ufed. And ftrange it is that Culpeper forgets his wonted Reverence to the Judgment of Me** fites when he cenfures this Pill. I like it the better, becaufe the difereet Colledg of H'mflerdam having accor¬ ding to the frugal and fober humor of that Nation, left out many Medi¬ caments of all forts wherewith the Difpenfatories of moft Cities and common-wealths are peftered, and the younger praffitiohers diftrafted, they have neverthelefs retained this Pill as that which by reafon of its peculiar compofition, having fo ma¬ ny generous gums therein, and its peculiar fitnefs for fome cafes and occafions, could not befpared. I conceive they are unjuftly called Fae- tidee, and that iome Effeminate Courtier gave them that Name. For why Ihould a Phyfit’ian judg the ftrong fine! of Ammoniacum, Saga- penmn, Opopanax, See. to be {lin¬ king ? I did never think that Fe aver- few. Ground Ivy, or Alehoof, Herb Robert and fuch like, weref tin lung Herbs, but that they were indeed of a vehement, Grave, and Mafculine fent. Opop, anax and Bdellium, two noble gums, are left out in the laft Edition of the Difien fatary in ^Latiu, I fuppofe through miftake, and to the detriment of the Pills. Their dofe is from two fcruples to one dram. I conceive them to be Elegantly and Artfully compounded ana in ftead of Faetidaj I would have them called Pilulee Viriles, Marti ales, or Hercules. And to conclude, out of the efteein I have of them, I fhall yet more fully mufter their Virtues and Ufes, as folfoweth. They are properly fitted for the Brain, Nerves, Joynts and Limbs, and to remedy their old and cold difi- eafes, vixj Head-aches of the whole or half head.
