Hojemary one pound. Flowers of chamomely Broom, White Lilliesy Elders, Seeds of cumin, Fenugreek^ Hoots of Hellebore blacf and white, Bari\»f and Lemons, of each four ounces. Euphorbium, Mufiardy CafioriuMy Pellitory of Spain, of each an ounce. Oyl fixteen pound. Wine thret pound. The Herbs, Flowers, Seeds, andEu- phorbium being bruifed,the roots,Barfs, and Cafiorium cm, all of them infufed twelve hours in the Wine and Oyl, in a warm bath, then boyled with a gentle fire, to the cnnfkmption of the wine and tnoifiure,firain the Oyl and keep it. Culpeper.’] Many people by catch¬ ing bruifes when they are young, come to feel it when they are old; others by catching cold, catch a lamenefs in their limbs ; to both which I commend this Soveraign Oyl to bath their grieved members with. Venues newly added. This Oyl had its original in En¬ gland as the name imports, being a thing unknown to all forreign ctif- penfatories. I conceive it was firft devifed forfotne Earl or Gountefs of Exceter which Honor did anciently belong to the family of the Court- neys, as I have been informed. It is of foveraign ufe for al cold difea- fes of the brain, nerves, ftomach, limbs ;for palfies,convulsions, cramps, tremblings of the hands or other parts being anointed upon the futures or feams of the Head, nape of the neck, the whol back-bone, the places af- f'e&ed, and chiefly upon the original of the nerves which are fiAfervient to the motion of the difeared part. It is good for cold fwellings, for fleepy difeafes being mixed in cly- fters the quantity of an ounce or two. Oleum Hirundinum. Page 148 Lat. Both this and the former are appropriated to old bruifes and pains therof com¬ ing, as alfo to fprains. If you pleafe you may mix them together. Venues newly added. This iramitates the Virtues of the former, and is good for all old and cold difeafes of the Brain, Nerves, Limbs, and Bowels ; being (anoin¬ ted upon the Nape of the Neck, the Back-bone, the Stomach, and Regi¬ ons of parts offended with-any aches or weaknefs. * Oleum Hyperici compofitum. Page 148. Latin. Or Oyl of Saint Johns wort Compound. Colledg.] Take of the tops of Saint Johns-wort four ounces. Steep them three whol dates in a pound of old SaUet Oyl, in the heat either of a Bath, or of the Sun ; then prefi them out, repeat the infufion the fecond or third time, then boyl them til the Wtne be almoft confirmed, prefs them out, and by adding Turpentine,Ithree ounces. Saffron, one fcruple. Boyl it a little and keep it. Culpeper.] See the Simple Oyl of St. Johns-wort, than, which this is ftrongef. Oleum Hyperici maps Compofitum. Page 148. Lat. Or, Oyl of Saint J ohns-wort more compound. Colledg.] Takf of white Wint thret pound. Tops of St. J ohns-wort ripe and gent¬ ly bruifed, four handfulsfitep them two dates in a glafi clofe flopped. Boyl them in a Bath, and flrainthem flronglyy repeat the infufion three times, having firained it the third time, ad to every found of DtcoElion, Old Oyl four pound. Turpentine fix ounces. Oyl of Wormwood thret ounces. Dittany, Gentian, Carduus, Tormentil, Car line,or Carduut Maria, Calamus »/fromaticus, all of them bruifed ; of each two drams. Earth-wormt often wajhed in white Wine two ounces. Set it in the Sun five or fix weeks, then keep it clofe flopped. Culpeper.] Befides the vertues of the limple Oyl of St. Johns-worf, which this performs more effectual- ' ly, it is an excellent remedy for old bruifes, aches, and Sprains. Venues newly added. Thefe Oyls do wonderfully ftreng- then the Nerves and confequently help tremblings, Palfies, Cramps, Convulfions, numnefs, being fmea- red upon the feams of the Head, the Nape of the Neck, and all along the Back-bone from the top thereof to the bottome alfo it is good to ftreng- then the joynts being anointed thei- upon.
