On the front the young Dionysus, wearing buskins and carrying a chlamys on his left arm, drives the butt of his thyrsus against an excited satyr who roars with pain; behind the satyr stands a maenad with downeast eyes : on the back of the vase are three youths in conversation, from the Hope collection at Deepdene (Tillyard, “Hope Vases,” no. 214, pl. 30); a good example of the early South Italian-Greek School of the 4th Cent. s.c. [Pl. XTV] 201 <A bronze Mirror Cover, 54 in. diam. decorated with a figure in repoussé relief, Hros seated on a rock playing with a goose, fragments of the mirror go with the cover; fine Greek work of the 4th.
